Purrfectly Super: A Cat-Style Take On Sunday’s Game

Cats are so not into the Super Bowl. Lacking the passion to care about screen passes or first and 10, they can yawn their way through an entire NFL season and not even notice what teams take the field in between the commercials starring Clydesdales. In recent years, non-football events have given cats a slice of the Super Bowl spotlight. Animal Planet’s annual Puppy Bowl highlights a spectacular Kitty Halftime show featuring adoptable kittens taking over the playing field and generating automatic “Awwwwww” moments. Last year, Hallmark Channel joined the cat ranks with the first annual Kitten Bowl, an event so successful, it’s back this year with at least 100 yards of nonstop adorability. Why watch overpaid football players crash their helmeted heads when we can see tiny tabbies and calicos displaying pure joy?

And now add another purrfect feline fun option to your game day viewing pleasure. Friskies, which brought us the endearing series of “Dear Kitten” spots, has teamed with BuzzFeed to air their first-ever collaborative game day ad titled “Dear Kitten: Regarding the Big Game.” If you haven’t seen the earlier Dear Kitten chapters, then you’re not among the tens of millions of viewers who’ve caught the series since its debut last June. Every resident cat and newly arrived kitten can relate to the wise silver tabby who schools a sweet red kitten on life and the joy of good cat food.

For this installment, Cat will provide Kitten with the ultimate “survival guide” for the Big Game. Friskies and BuzzFeed have taken a distinctive approach to this spot. The 60-second commercial is “kitten-sized,” so it will air on NBC affiliates (NBC will broadcast the Super Bowl) in three select cat-themed markets: Kitty Hawk, N.C., Los Gatos, Calif. and Pawnee, Neb. Such a clever ploy, a cat could have thought of it.

But even those of us outside these markets can still enjoy the official 60-second TV spot right here at Friskies YouTube channel.  You can also check out BuzzFeed’s YouTube channel to watch “Dear Kitten: Regarding the Big Game” and visit Friskies YouTube channel for additional “Dear Kitten: Regarding the Big Game” including a post-game ‘conversation.’  And if you or your cat wish to join the online conversation, use hashtag #DearKitten to add to the thread.

No matter what team you’re pulling for, add to your game day enjoyment with a dose of virtual cat happiness. Cats know they’re the real winners on Super Bowl Sunday, and they don’t need a touchdown celebration to prove it.
